THE ROOTS: designing roots for Słupsk’s future.
This proposal for communal housing responds to the needs of Słupsk’s young families, creating an environment that supports growth at every stage of life. More than housing, the project offers a foundation, a place to start a family, build community, and thrive through access to childcare facilities, shared services, and low amenity costs.
Architecturally, The Roots draws inspiration from Słupsk’s historic urban fabric. Modest brick façades reference the city’s architectural identity, while open galleries, originally introduced for practical circulation become the defining visual feature of the building. Their light, expressive form intentionally contrasts with the solidity of the brick, giving the development a distinctly contemporary character.
The Roots envisions housing that nurtures stability, connection, and long-term belonging, creating not just homes, but foundations for the city’s future.
Developed within Design Studio 1 (2025/26) led by dr inż. arch. Jakub Szczęsny, the project was presented in the presence of special guests: Mr. Maciej Araszkiewicz, Chief of the Architecture and Planning Department of the Municipality of Słupsk, Dean of our Faculty dr hab. inż. arch. Krzysztof Koszewski, and ASK director, dr inż. arch. Krystian Kwieciński.
