dr inż. arch. Jakub Szczęsny

Jakub earned his diploma of engineer-architect at the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw Institute of Technology in 2000.
He also studied at Ecole d’Architecture Paris-la-Defense and Escuela Tecnica Superior de Barcelona.
He did his PhD at Warsaw’s Academy of Fine Arts Faculty of Design in 2011. He has been teaching the design of public spaces at the School of Form in Poznań and lecturing at GSAPP, FAU, Bezalel School of Architecture, and the University of Western Australia.

Before starting his practice in architecture and art as a founding member of Centrala Designers Task Force, he was a press illustrator (Nowa Fantastyka, Fluid, and Playboy magazines), an advertising illustrator, art director, and film director’s assistant for several production houses in Warsaw and Barcelona. In 2013, Jakub designed product lines and developed a marketing strategy for Simple House, a company building semi-prefabricated timber houses. His project of Keret House was included in the permanent collection of MoMA New York in 2014. He spent several years traveling to artist-in-residency centers such as NKD Dale (Norway), Schloss Solitude (Germany), Residency Unlimited and Futura (USA), SPACED (Australia), Casa das Caldeiras and Casa do Povo (Brazil) and Arquetopia (Mexico).

Jakub has written and hosted several TV programs on architecture and interior design for DOMO+, Discovery Channel, and Polsat. His texts and monthly columns appear in Architektura & Biznes, Elle Decoration, and Polityka Salon magazines. His books popularizing architecture were published by the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.
He advises Polish companies, such as Paged Meble, Paged Sklejki, Biobazar, Freedom Houses, and Yawal.
In 2023, his works were shown in a retrospective exhibition organized by Gdynia City Museum as part of the series entitled „Polish Designs Polish Designers „. Since 2016, he has been running his studio SZCZ (www.szcz.com.pl) in Warsaw.
