Description

The subject of the present work is a project of developing the Warsaw Fortress system. Its purpose is to start a discussion about rescuing forgotten monuments, whence the scope of the work encompasses the solutions both for the whole structure and for each of the forts separately.
The work was divided into two parts:

THE THEORETICAL PART – The analysis of the opportunities of adapting the Warsaw Fortress to its new functions.In the first chapter the complex problems that will be discussed were presented: the political‐historical context of establishing the Warsaw Fortress was described, from the situation in Europe through the industrial revolution to the plans of liquidating the Fortress. The purpose of this fragment is to make the reader aware of the existence of military structures in Warsaw and to explain briefly the circumstances of their establishment.
In the second part the spatial composition of the Warsaw Fortress is discussed, as well as its influence on the city tissue, the attempts at managing this heritage and its military architecture characteristics. The conclusion of these analyses is a consideration of the opportunities and limitations in the adaptation of the fortification structures. Additionally, changes in the perception of cultural heritage and in the methods of protecting it are described. Diverse subjects participating in this process (inhabitants, authorities, investors, restorers) are taken into account and a proposition of an adequate form of protection, which is a cultural park, is introduced.

The third part refers to the marketing aspect. Architecture is considered as a product subject to market laws. It aims at proving that the complex of fortifications as an investment has a huge marketing potential and requires adaptation not only regarding the construction, but also on the mental level.
THE PROJECT PART ‐ FortifiACTIONS
On the basis of the conclusions from the theoretical part a project of developingthe entire system was created. It was described in the first part of this chapter. It was decided to analyse the fortifications from the point of view of certain parameters so as to classify the forts into units of a similar set of characteristics. Next, a “programme of intervention” (adjusted to their predispositions) was worked out and functional propositions were sketched for each fort. Additionally, a visual identification project was drawn up for the entire investment.

In the second part, a project of Bema Fort as a detailed solution was presented. It is based on the conclusions from the theoretical part. The study comprises the

analyses of the location, the decision process, the urban and the architectural project.

Given the scope of the area discussed, the work was prepared in cooperation with student Anna Śliwka. Thence, the theoretical part and the project of developing the whole system were drawn up together (the division of work being clearly marked) and additionally each student prepared a detailed project of developing one of the forts.
